The ARME team is delighted to congratulate Dr Tom Goodman on being awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in His Majesty the King’s New Year Honours List for 2026.

The honour recognises Tom’s services to technology in the West Midlands. Tom contributed to ARME’s research on interactive virtual ensembles, including work on near real-time estimation of synchronisation parameters for ensemble musicians. He completed his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Birmingham in 2022, with a dissertation on geometric approaches to pitch estimation of acoustic musical signals, and has continued to support technology, education, and community activity across the region.

Alongside his research and professional work, Tom is CEO and founder of HackTheMidlands, a 24-hour creative marathon open to people of all ages and backgrounds, and organiser of TechMids Conference. He is also a Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a former Fellow of the Warwick Institute of Engagement.

Congratulations Tom, from everyone at ARME.
